Poster for the January 2016 meeting

Colin Brown gave an explanation that the first maps were made for military purposes, and the Board of Ordnance was set up in 1753. A theodolite was made to achieve greater accuracy. Known as The Great Theodolite it measured 3 feet across and took 3 years to make. Colin brought maps for us to look at including ones with military areas, such as Chatham Dockyard, obliterated in white on the map. Old editions of the O.S. maps are still available, although they are now stored in digital format and printed to order.
