In his usual inimitable fashion, Neil brings us his quirky view of our county’s curiosities and strange happenings.
20 September, Time to Thank Them
This is an audio-visual presentation which includes a speaker, slides and professional actors. It focusses on the extraordinary story of the Voluntary Aid Detachment which is particularly relevant to Higham as The Great Hermitage in Hermitage Road was used as a VAD Hospital in WW1.
15 November 2018, The History of Christmas (change from previously advertised)
Speaker: Martin Crowther.
This talk explores the history of Christmas using historic artefacts and images from Yuletides past, giving you the opportunity to see, feel, smell, listen and even taste!
November is traditionally our Christmas meeting, so there will be wine and a raffle.
17 January 2019, The Knights Templar
Speaker: Dr Geoff Doel.
With Temple Manor in nearby Strood, this talk is of particular local interest. The Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon was a military order founded in 1118 to protect pilgrims from bandits in the Holy Land and became very powerful and wealthy.
21 March 2019, A Schoolgirls’ War
Speaker: Mary Smith.
This talk, by a former head mistress of Maidstone Grammar Schools for Girls, is based on her book A Schoolgirl’s War which features the equisite, original artwork of an art teacher in WW2, who set out to document in paint and pencil, the lives of school children as the way unfolded.
There are also fascinating memories and anecdotes shared by some of the pupils themselves.
St Mary’s Church, Higham – has a Heritage Open Day on Saturday 21 September between 10.30am and 3.30pm.
Free Historic Tours will run at 11am 12 noon 1pm and 2pm.
All Donations will go to ‘Inspire Higham’ – a major fund raising project to repair and preserve the church spire
